Dream home for tigers with a hand from Lawn Solutions Australia

21 Oct 2016

Dreamworld on the Queensland Gold Coast is just one premium location to show off a Lawn Solutions Australia Sir Walter DNA Certified lawn-makeover recently with the opening of the first stage of their $7 million renovations to their ‘Tiger Island’ exhibit opened last month.

The attraction has been upgraded to include covered seating for up to 500 people, with the expansive lawns and splash pools featuring viewing areas to even watch the park’s tigers while they’re underwater.

Speaking on the opening of the new facility, world-renowned designer and television personality, Jamie Durie spoke of the importance of the new atttraction and his involvement in the project.

“It’s really close to my heart because it involves conservation, preservation and sustainability,” said Durie.

“This is a very important contributor to tiger conservation and partnered with the Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation they are now the biggest financial providor for tiger conservation worldwide; from public donations to first-hand involvement with preservation projects.”

“It has been a priveledge to be involved and I have adored designing the landscape for this project . . . my team and I have had a ball and it really has been a team effort. From the Tiger Handlers all the way through to the contractors and turf suppliers, everyones come together to create this incredible new facility,” he went on to say.

Durie made the decision to go with a specific turf-type for the expansive lawn-area early in the design stage after working with Lawn Solutions Australia on the best-suited variety.

He said he went to “extreme lengths” to make sure the turf was perfect for the tigers.

“We were after a turf-type that was soft, yet durable enough to withstand the rigours of the tigers and handlers.”

“We were after a self-repairing turf-type so that when the tigers run, coursing into the turf, it will re-establish itself in record time . . . this is the extent we would go to for elite athletes,” he said.

“The secret to a good lawn is good drainage and access to oxygen and nutrients and when we brought the turf in we made sure it was semi-washed so we weren’t bringing any pathogens.”

Suppliers of the turf for the project, Lawn Solutions Australia member turfgrowers Daley’s Turf of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast region were also excited to be part of the project.

“Thanks to Lawn Solutions Australia’s Gavin Rogers and discussions he had with Jamie Durie, our Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo lawn turf was requested for the Tiger Island project,” said Daley’s Turf proprietor Terry Daley.

“Being grown on high-infiltration sand/soil profile, and without the need for removal of any heavy soil or clay, our turf was perfect for this project,” said Daley.

“With a very tight timeline, we only had one day available to install around 1,500 square metres of Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo turf.”

“The on-site landscapers did a great job in preparing the site for us,” he explained, “with the sand base allowing for excellent drainage properties that would help to alleviate any compaction issues down the track,”

There were no special turf installation secrets according to Daley, who said they incorporated some light organics and a slow-release-turf-starter fertiliser into the sand-surface, along with an application of some dolomite to help with moisture retention just prior to turfing.

“We were very happy with the way the turf went down and the overall finish of the grass-surface now it’s opened – well it speaks for itself . . . it’s a fantastic lawn-area that’s in great condition; it’s a ‘Dream-Lawn’,” he says with a smile.
